As soon as I read the summary of this beautiful novel by Benjamin Ludwig, I knew I had to read it. As the mother of a young son with autism, the opportunity to get inside his head, even just a tiny bit and in a fictional setting, was an urge that was just too powerful to resist. As a result, I read Ginny Moon and found myself with goosebumps throughout the book. Ludwig captured her character, the inner workings of autism, the struggles that special needs families face, and the beautiful gifts that autism can give in such a magnificent way.

Ginny is one of the best characters I have read in a very long time. Her autism is written in such a powerful way that I found myself learning even more about the disorder through Ginny. Her thought process and quirks were well-crafted, and life with autism was authentically portrayed. As adoptive parents who CHOSE to raise Ginny, the issues that faced Brian and Maura and their reactions to those issues left me angry with them at times, but they were also very real. The honesty with which this book was written is beautiful and raw, and I found my heart being broken time and time again while reading, mostly for Ginny, but also for those who cared deeply for her, despite the minimal reinforcement they received from Ginny as a result of the unique inner workings of her brain.

The drama involved with Ginny's birth mother provided a compelling plot to Ginny's story, but the ultimate story in this book truly lies in Ginny's heart and her journey to understanding the things that happened "on the other side of Forever," and how to live in the "Aftermath." And that journey is one that will leave you absolutely speechless.

Thank you for such a beautiful read, Mr. Ludwig. ❤️

GINNY MOON 9781489220707 Books Reviews

Oh I just adored this book. Ginny is an absolutely fascinating character, one of a kind, and her life as it unfolds here is something to behold. So compelling. Such resilience. Such wonderful writing.
Very good read. Written through the eyes of a 13 year old autistic girl who has been taken from her abusive mother. After being a foster child in other homes she is now in her "forever home" with her adoptive parents. At first I read it as a mystery story but it soon became so much more. Fell in love with the Original Ginny Moon. Wish I got the hard copy instead of the version - it is the kind of book you want to hold in your hands and keep.
I loved this story! I thought people were being a little dramatic when they said how anxious it made them. I mean it's a contemporary not a thriller. Boy, was I wrong. Ginny Moon makes some bad decisions that will keep your heart racing throughout the entire book. I usually own listen to my audiobooks when I'm driving or doing dishes but last night I had to just stay up listening because I needed to see how it all worked out.

I highly recommend this book. I love that the main character is a teenage girl with autism and I love that it deals with adoption but I mostly just love the story and the writing. I can't believe it took me this long to get to this DBC pick!
I read daily, mostly prefer literary fiction and go through books very quickly. Some of them are bad, the majority are interesting, a few are exceptional. This is one of those few exceptional books and I don't say that very often. I truly appreciate the amount of time each author takes from their lives to craft their work of art but Benjamin Ludwig is a gleaming example. He must be a pretty interesting fellow himself to have imagined such a unique story line, I think I'd be interested to read anything he wrote because there must be a piece of Ginny Moon's lovely spirit inside his head to be able to voice her thoughts so well.
At age fourteen GINNY MOON finally has her Forever Family, but that doesn’t keep her from wanting connect with her Birth Mother Gloria. Ginny left her baby doll in a suitcase when the police took her away five years ago. She doesn’t want a new doll, she wants Her Doll. The lengths she’ll go may cost her dearly.

Ginny, narrates the the story in a heartbreakingly authentic voice. Autistic with developmental delays, she has difficulty understanding subtleties and nuances as well as expressing herself. She’s frustrating and loving and oh so complex. Benjamin Ludwig truly captured this unique character. I understood the Forever Parents’ frustrations, especially once Baby Wendy was born. I would have been nervous and distrustful of Ginny too, though I hope more sensitively.

My opinion as to whether Ginny should stay in the home went back and forth. She was a LOT of work, and couldn’t be trusted to keep herself safe because Ginny didn’t understand the consequences of her behavior. But, her reasons for being hyper-focused were both sympathetic and understandable. I know I couldn’t parent her, I wouldn’t have the patience of Forever Dad and if I treated her the way Forever Mom did when most stressed, I’d hate myself.

GINNY MOON made me think and feel. I can’t wait to see what Ludwig writes next.
This book nearly killed me. I could not take my eyes away from the page. My whole being seemed so invested in the fate of Ginny Moon and her Forever Family. Ginny Moon is fourteen years old and autistic. She was removed from her home at age 9 because of abuse and neglect by her drug addicted birth mother and the mother’s boyfriends. The Forever Family is not Ginny’s first placement. She has either run away or forced her own removal with at least two previous families. In this book, the reader lives in Ginny’s head and see through Ginny’s eyes. It is frightening and confusing most of the time. My heart went out to each of the characters. The book is unlike anything else I have read and it is about issues that I know very little about so I cannot judge its authenticity or accuracy with an expert eye. But I can say that it rang true to this experienced reader. Ginny Moon is not a character that I will forget. I cannot say that this is a book that I enjoyed, because I worried about everyone as I read it. It is a creative and compelling work of storytelling. This is a very adult book that would also be appropriate and illuminating for high school age readers.
The title was a little deceptive I initially thought. But the light clicked for me once I began to read it and it made sense. Sophie is an 18 year old who falls for a much younger man. At times in the book she is so immature I wanted to strangle her. At other times, she was wise beyond her years. I really did enjoy watching this couple fall in love and work through their troubles.

The only thing that prevented me from giving this story 4 stars was the numerous grammatical errors in the book. It completely takes away from my reading experience to constantly make corrections in my head while reading.

A Dangerous Man The Complete Collection Awakening Rebellion Claim Surrender Serena Grey 9781494420574 Books Reviews

I really got pulled into this story drone the beginning sofie and David had lot of chemistry even though they got together so quickly . I hated when I got the middle the book the author retold the story from the beginning from David's point of view. It then picked up later.
What sets this apart from the other billionares type romances is that we are privileged to see the story from both sides. It is deeper this way and reveals the secret or twists to the storyline....well done enjoyed...looking forward to part4
Good story at times grow tired of her but then it picks up. A little more from the other women like his mom, or former girlfriend would have spiced up the story or even something from the childhood love interest would have helped. Good bones but to much repeat of first meeting land oh I want him .
Yes, David Preston is a dangerous man. All alpha but has he lost his heart to the innocent Sophie? I love being in love and these two are in a pickle. One knows exactly what has happened, the other is fighting because.. Life has a lot of ups and downs and these two start off on a rollercoaster of emotions and events. Can't wait for part 4. I'm hooked..
I enjoyed this story - even tho’ I cried some tears! It was a beautiful story with all the feels. This author has become another favorite of mine.
I didn't see the hero as being a particularly dangerous man, although he does have problems opening up and verbally expressing his emotions.

I totally enjoyed the interactions between the hero and heroine. It is a very sensuous book and I liked the way the two of them were so over-poweringly attracted to each other.

If you like passionate romance--this is the book for you.
I really enjoyed this series, and look forward to the next book. I thought the characters were believable and the story had a great pace. I thought the last book was insightful and added a lot to the romance of their relationship. I'm glad I bought this book, I never buy novellas because they aren't usually a good value and I read a ton..... however, not mad that I will have to buy the 4th book, can't wait to see how their ending unfolds.

I really struggled with how to rate this book. It is absolutely beautiful lyrical book. It felt,at times, like I was reading a poem, rather than a novel. I loved the alternating chapters with the different characters, even if it took me a few beats to try to figure out whose eyes we were looking through now. I loved that the characters were not perfect, that Ann had a previous crush that suggested she had some underlying psychological issues. I loved reading this book. I spent the whole time trying to figure out the mystery, formulating theories, sure there was much more going on that was to be revealed, trusting that if invested in these characters and this story, that there would be a payoff...and yet I was left with nothing. There were no answers at the end. For some people this might be fine, but I felt betrayed. Perhaps if I had read this as part of a book club, it would have been easier because I could have discussed it immediately with others and found some resolution, but I did not, and as a result, I felt adrift and frustrated.

Idaho 9780701189099 Books Reviews

This is one of the better novels I have read in a while. Great descriptions of characters' emotions. Some chapters that would stand on their own as a great short story. Reading the thoughts of of a man losing his memory, and slowly passing felt like having those thoughts myself. Powerful stuff, perhaps not for the very faint heart-ed. The ending is complete, THEIR story is over.
Having read the authors explanation of her choices, her thought process and intentions make sense; however, the execution resulted in a book that felt pointless. She didn't succeed in creating the connections that she was trying to convey. Her understanding of her characters and their relationships are interesting and well thought-out but did not make it into the pages of her book. It's too bad really. The concept, coupled with her perceptions of her characters, would have made for a great book.
Ahaunting debut novel about life and death, love and memory, holding on and letting go. While the plot turns on one violent act, the act itself is never described directly. Instead, Emily Ruskovich approaches it from many different angles at many different spots on the timeline, a bit like trying to approach a wild animal without scaring it away. The result is a multifaceted exploration of loss that will stick with me for a very, very long time.

Ruskovich manages to write a very literary novel that is also a stay-up-all-night page-turner, which is an extraordinary feat. I will absolutely be buying her next novel, whenever it appears.
A friend recommended this book, and I'll admit that being from Idaho I was apprehensive. But there was no need because I LOVED it. From the incredibly descriptive and visual passages, to the simple yet incredibly honest and moving moments, I could not put this book down. I'm an avid reader, but not an avid reviewer, nevertheless I would not hesitate to recommend this book. Read it. You'll be doing yourself a favor.
I think this is a book you either love or hate. I felt the author’s writing was exemplary. The symbolism brought every small detail to life, whether it was the description of the dog following the young girl’s scent or the delivery of the pigs; I was drawn in by every word. I would have given the book 5 stars if there had been some resolution at the end. I wanted to understand Jenny’s action that changed the course of everything (will spare details for those who haven’t read the book), but the book ended leaving that burning question (center to the entire novel) unanswered. Nevertheless, I will read more by this writer just to experience the lyricism of her work.
This is one of the most beautifully written books I have read in a long time. It is at the same time one of the most depressing.
From the very beginning, the reader is reeled in to a mystery -- the murder of a child by her mother. The mystery is never definitely answered but along the way the characters are so diverse and interesting that you want the best for them in the face of serious doubt that things will turn out well.
This is a murder mystery, but it is so beautifully written by someone who truly understands that there are rarely simple explanations for such events. The book felt more like a psychological drama than a suspenseful murder mystery.
A luxuriously magical retelling of Beauty and the Beast set in seventeenth-century France--and told from the point of view of the Beast himself.

I am neither monster nor man—yet I am both.

I am the Beast.

He is a broken, wild thing, his heart’s nature exposed by his beastly form. Plot

This was an arc given to me from NetGalley and the publisher. So, thank you for that. I don't need to really explain this too much because the plot is literally Beauty and the Beast with some minor changes. One change is that the book is from the beast's point of view. Another change is Bell is named Isabeau and she has two sisters as well. The house is enchanted and the forest but there is no one in the house. There is no Gaston and there really is no villain. The whole plot is honestly...boring. It is slow and not a lot happens in the story that I did not already know. I was so excited about this book because this is one of my favorite fantasy stories and I always wanted to hear from the Beast. But the story is dull and slow. The Beast is just pinning the whole time and Isabeau is annoying as well. I was really frustrated with the pacing and how there was zero action. Like nothing happens. I was utterly perplexed.

Characters

I did NOT care for them. This is sad because I love these characters but not in this book. They are either whiny, pinning, crying, saying sorry, or just doing nothing worthy of note. I did not connect with them nor did I feel for them. I love the Beast but I did not care for him in this story. Really I would rather he stayed a beast in the end then deal with him continue to ask Isabeau to marry him and she says no then gets sad and repeat. The side characters add absolutely nothing to the story. They were worse than boring and I did not care to read about them. We got almost whole chapters dedicated to them and I was so confused on why. They were so dull and one-dimensional.

Writing/Romance

The writing was subpar and badly paced. The prose was silly and nothing felt magical about a story that was supposed to be magical. The romance was dead. I didn't care if they got together in the end nor did I feel they even cared about one another. The whole romance was so one-sided and then boom she wants him in the end. Unlike the movie where we see a gradual growth of interest and love the book had none of that. This book was a huge disappointment and I am sad by how much I disliked it.

The Beast Heart A Novel of Beauty and the Beast Leife Shallcross Books Reviews

Disclosure I received a review copy from the publisher in exchange for a honest review.

3 1/2 stars.

Beauty and The Beast is one of the most beloved and well-known fairy tale in the world. Many people have drawn inspiration from the story; having it adapted, retold or re-imagined time and time again over the years. But one thing that has never change was the point of view. It has always been from the female perspective, from Belle (Isabeau)'s point-of-view. Until now. Shallcross gives readers an intimate and in-depth look inside the Beast’s mind; where we will finally see what he thought of his curse and his initial impression of Isabeau.

I was excited when I found out The Beast’s Heart was a Beauty and The Beast re-imagining from the Beast’s perspective. I’ve always wondered when someone was going to get around to writing one and lo’ and behold Shallcross delivered. But the excitement isn’t without some trepidation. My only concern and hope was that we didn’t get a repeat of the captive scenario again. That part of the original story has always rubbed me the wrong way and I hoped any and all future retelling would address it differently. Many did not, but Shallcross did. Isabeau ended up at the Beast’s castle in pretty much the same way as she always has, which was in replacement for her father. However, she remains a “guest” at the Beast’s castle of her own free-will. The Beast clearly gives Isabeau a choice to leave once she met him or stay with him for the duration of a year to keep him company. Isabeau seeing how sad and lonely the Beast was agrees to stay for the year.

If you’re expecting a Disney version of Beauty and The Beast then you’re going to be sorely disappointed. But if it’s a complete new and fresh take on the story that you want, then you’ve found it. Not only are readers getting a new perspective on the fairy tale but Shallcross expanded on both Beast and Isabeau’s backstory including more characters and added her own spin on the magic and curse. In the original and various retelling, there were two to three characters at most. In The Beast’s Heart readers will meet Isabeau’s father and two sisters and various people that come into the sisters’ lives. The story jumps back and forth between what occurs at the castle with Beast and Isabeau and back at the cottage with Isabeau’s family as they adjust to life without Isabeau.

There was no villain in The Beast’s Heart, not like Gaston in the Disney version and not unless you consider the Fairy that cursed the Beast as a baddie. Instead the story focused on the characters’ relationships over the duration of a year. Readers watched as each character grew, developed and reacted to the changes and obstacles thrown their way. While I normally like action in my story, I also appreciated the character driven approach that Shallcross took. There was never a detail too small or insignificant that Shallcross didn’t add. Some may enjoy reading about the sisters’ mundane tasks like learning a new recipe or finding a potential suitors but those that crave more excitement will likely be bored as the story continues in a monotonic tone till the very end. I am in the former category.

All in all, The Beast’s Heart was quite enjoyable and better than I expected. The pacing was without a doubt slow and I often found myself putting the book down but even then, I kept thinking about the characters and was eager to find out what happened next. The story held my interest from beginning to end, when I did and didn’t read, which doesn’t happen often. I think true Beauty and the Beast and fairy tale fans will love this new take on the classic. Overall, The Beast’s Heart was a solid debut and a re-imagining worth reading.

The Smoke Jumper A Novel Nicholas Evans 9780440235163 Books Reviews

This was by far the most entertaining CD I have listened to in a very long time. I enjoyed listening to this story while commuting to work and back. I even obeyed the speed limits so I could hear more of the book before arriving at my destination. Luke Perry was the narrater and he did a remarkable job. Makes for an enjoyable stress reducer while commuting in work traffic. This had a great storyline and with Luke Perry reading it, you just can't ask for more!
The story encompasses from time to time all of the moods characterized in your rating checklist, but in the end resolves the tangled threads into what I can only describe as "hopeful".
The ending is so bad I could not finish...Does not follow the beginning and goes into a "Who cares" 3/4 of the way through.
Must be a bad case of writer's block because "The Loop" was pretty good.
The Smoke Jumper by Nicholas Evans is the story of three people and the love and life they share. Ed and Conner are best friends and both aree smoke jumpers who parachute into fires to head them off. Then Julia enters the picture and three are set off on adventure and disaster, love and betrayal. The book tells their stories as it focuses on them separately and together and the many intersecting lines that bring them together. The Smoke Jumper is heart breaking, heart wrenching, touching, and intense.
This was an EXCELLENT book! Ladies, don't let the title fool you. If you think you may not like this because it is about smoke jumpers, think again. Two of the main characters are smoke jumpers but there's much more to the book. It's more of a love story than a story about smoke jumpers. I would think this book would appeal more to women than to men. The author does a really good job in building the characters.
Sometimes I get bored with a book half way through and stop reading it. This kept my attention and it was hard to put down!
I hope they make a movie out of this book!
An interesting storyline, characters that you'll feel like you know personally, making it all a book that you'll wish could go on and on.
Probably one of most favorite books. I read it yearly. I usually read romances but my husband gave me this to read and I think it has a great story that guys or gals would enjoy but also a nice romance. It really touched me and makes you think and life, love and what is important.
A huge journey through the lives of 3 unforgettable main characters, and a host of side stories. Evans gives his characters believable and likeable attributes and draws the reader into their lives. I loved the details of smoke jumping, as well as other well-researched activities, including the ravages of war. A long and complicated story, I still didn't want it to end.
Perhaps it's just because this book gives me the little hope I need in life. But this book touches my soul in a strange and peculiar way. I love it so much I've read it quite a few times and finally purchased it. Nicholas Evans is one of my favorite writers and his words bring me peace and joy. I never want his books to end.
Every woman who joined the book club expected to expand their literary horizons. But when they stop reading the classics and start exploring the steamy side of fiction, they discover just how much fun reading can be…

When the book club makes their first erotic selection The Sexual Education of Lady Emma Whitehead, marketing executive Georgia Malone is surprised to find herself identifying with the main character. Like Emma, Georgia is a widow who has never truly experienced the joys of sex. But when she meets the spokesman for her newest campaign, Georgia’s long-buried libido is awakened.

Hockey star Woody Hanrahan is charming and cocky—the sort of man Georgia usually avoids. But while her mind is saying stay away, Georgia’s body is telling her to give in every time Woody comes near. Now as her book club explores the tantalizing extremes of fiction, Georgia is experiencing first hand, and for the first time, the real pleasures of the flesh, and fulfilling the desires that—chapter by chapter—are getting delightfully dirty. Woody is hers to command in a hundred deliciously wicked ways, but when it comes to writing her own happy ending, this dirty girl doesn’t just need his body—she wants his heart.

The Dirty Girls Book Club Savanna Fox Books

A disclaimer, first--I'm a definite fan of Susan Lyons aka Savanna Fox. Her characters are about as real as fictional folk can be, and the protagonists in The Dirty Girls Book Club definitely come to life. Both Woody and Georgia (I love their names!) have issues and misconceptions about one another that are dealt with intelligently and with humor. Their romance is the kind that leaves you smiling, and I absolutely wanted to cheer when I got to the very satisfactory ending. I'm all about that "happily ever after," and Savanna definitely delivers.

The Dirty Girls Book Club Savanna Fox Books Reviews

it had some worth, but I honestly would never have read it if the book club hadn't picked it!
I loved this book. One of the reviews I read before purchasing the book said how the book reminded them of actual hockey playoffs and it was so true. I loved the story and the story within the story. Everything came full circle. I will recommend this to book to everyone!
Dirty Girls Book Club is one of the best books I've read. I loved the characters and the Vancouver setting. The story has a perfect blend of erotica and the development of the relationship between Georgia and Woody. The book club reminded me of my book club. Savanna Fox writes under the names Susan Lyons and Susan Fox as well. If you love this book, you'll love her other books too. I did.
All 3 books are really good I would recommend them
This is a book club with 4 different wormen that change the reading source from staid to sexy. Each woman will have her own book. I just finished book 1 and can't wait until book 2 comes out. With different women the stories will be sexy in there own way. Give it a try and then be hooked.
Marcia Brooks
We read this because of the irony of us started our book club. We thought it would be a great inaugural book. It was good. I did like the writing style and how the main character used her reading to change her life forever. I do not think that I would remember this book forever, were it not for being he first book in my club. So there you have it.
I love this book. I've reread it many times. It was my first hockey romance. I just love Georgia and Woody and how they learn from each other. Georgia recently joined a book club. I enjoyed seeing them start the journey from people who read the same book to friends.
A New York Times Book Review Notable Book of 2017

An electrifying first collection from one of the most exciting short story writers of our time

"I can’t recall the last time I laughed this hard at a book. Simultaneously, I’m shocked and scandalized. She’s brilliant, this young woman."—David Sedaris

Ottessa Moshfegh's debut novel Eileen was one of the literary events of 2015. Garlanded with critical acclaim, it was named a book of the year by The Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle, nominated for a National Book Critics Circle Award, short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, and won the PEN/Hemingway Award for debut fiction. But as many critics noted, Moshfegh is particularly held in awe for her short stories. Homesick for Another World is the rare case where an author's short story collection is if anything more anticipated than her novel.

And for good reason. There's something eerily unsettling about Ottessa Moshfegh's stories, something almost dangerous, while also being delightful, and even laugh-out-loud funny. Her characters are all unsteady on their feet in one way or another; they all yearn for connection and betterment, though each in very different ways, but they are often tripped up by their own baser impulses and existential insecurities. Homesick for Another World is a master class in the varieties of self-deception across the gamut of individuals representing the human condition. But part of the unique quality of her voice, the echt Moshfeghian experience, is the way the grotesque and the outrageous are infused with tenderness and compassion. Moshfegh is our Flannery O'Connor, and Homesick for Another World is her Everything That Rises Must Converge or A Good Man is Hard to Find. The flesh is weak; the timber is crooked; people are cruel to each other, and stupid, and hurtful. But beauty comes from strange sources. And the dark energy surging through these stories is powerfully invigorating. We're in the hands of an author with a big mind, a big heart, blazing chops, and a political acuity that is needle-sharp. The needle hits the vein before we even feel the prick.

Homesick for Another World Stories Ottessa Moshfegh 9780399562884 Books

I enjoyed getting glimpses into the lives of these sick people. Moshfegh describes several gross physical acts with elegance, if that's at all possible. I mean, how would other writers fare if presented with such a challenge? It's difficult to not have a lapse in taste when describing trichotillomania, rashes, bulimia, fingers inserted into nether-orifices ... This author has talent, she has a voice, and she does what she wants, and all I can do is thank her for sticking to her guns--for refusing to whitewash and sanitize her work with color-safe bleach in order to appeal to vanilla-minded sensibilities. She takes a stand, corners a niche all her own, and dares to be different.

My favorite story was "The Beach Boy." It's perfect for those who want to avoid the icky stuff, but it's definitely a gut punch and I still think about it now, months later.

The scenarios presented here are alternately risible and outright disgusting; they are more of anti-climactic slices of life and vignettes than traditional stories with predictable arcs. I've been making an effort to read more female authors and I'm proud to have this hardcover on my shelf.

Homesick for Another World Stories Ottessa Moshfegh 9780399562884 Books Reviews

I read it all and I didn't like any of the characters . It was very well written and I truly felt terrible for everyone's story but I didn't want to know any of them.
As with any story collection, there are only a few that resonate. Some stories were enchanting, but most were crude and pointless. I do like the author's fearlessness toward subject matter and her descriptive style, so I don't regret having read the book.
This short story compilation was hard to put down! Moshfegh's characters are lewd, raunchy, imperfect and out there. I enjoy her writing style. I was shocked at times, dismayed, disgusted and also thrilled. She is a great writer. You may not like her characters, but you won't forget them.
This is a neatly written collection of 14 short stories. One thing that tied them together for me was the idea of friction, a word Moshfegh never uses, but one that came to mind over and over as I read the stories.

No one is without friction, and life in Moshfegh’s stories is so often about trying to overcome it or just accept it and deal with it the best you can. I’ll talk about two of the stories to show more of what I mean.

Mr. Wu, in the second story, is a lonely man who falls in love with the woman working at a game arcade. He watches her, he’s afraid of rejection. The life that he wants and the life that he has are out of sync, as they are for most of us. He finds ways to ease the friction — drinking, visiting prostitutes. The woman at the arcade is also lonely, with the same distance between what she has and what she wants. A match. And you can imagine the fear as misplaced, as a too typical story of fear being the only thing in the way of the life you want. But the story ends with friction re-asserting itself. Real life isn’t made of matches made in heaven.

The story behind the book’s title is the final one, “A Better Place”, in which a girl, Urszula, and her brother share a belief that they come from another place, not Earth. The only ways to return where they belong, and where they will be happy, are either to die, or to find the right person on Earth to kill. She finds the man she must kill, Jarek Jaskolka. Actually she dreams him up, but he is real, a “bad man.” If she kills him, her struggles in this life, in this place, will be over.

Urszula can’t believe that this is the world she was meant for. And maybe removing a "bad man" from it would actually help. But the remedy is magical more than it is real.

Seemingly all the stories here share this unavoidable element of friction, friction between the lives we have and the lives we want or expect, friction between our lives and the lives of others. Sometimes the friction can’t be overcome, maybe sometimes it can, but it’s always there — it’s a feature of life, not an exception. Life just might be a matter of learning to live with it in the best ways we can.
I am ok with a pretty heavy dose of weirdness. I think we are beyond the point of wondering if it is gratuitous or integral to the plot. It's nonstop weird. I dislike that stories just come to an end without some resolution or ironic twist or surprise. Even in short fiction I think stories should have a beginning, a middle, and an end.
I do not know why this book was recommended to me over and over by the algorithms that be, but they are sorely confused if you think this is in the same category as the rest of my reading material. I gave it a go because it was different, but all it really is is nothing. A big fat nothing. It isn't clever or interesting or well written. It is middle school level writing. I can not for the world imagine what the fuss is about. Another 30 year old living with their parents writes a book. Well gee, I'd hope you could do something from the never ending security blanket that is your life. Good thing your parents got off their ass, or you'd be living in your car. Ridiculous generation of people.
Moshfegh has, if possible, topped her debut novel, “Eileen,” in frank and unsentimental character dissection. Her characters are honest, at times grotesque, and presented in multi-dimensional and startling honesty. You won’t like them all, but you won’t forget them. The pining isolation of our crowded planet forms the homesickness referred to in the title. The writing is impeccable. There is not a single misstep on any page of this brilliant collection.
USA TODAY BESTSELLER • Score one for the Carolina Cold Fury hockey team as a stone-cold badass melts for a woman who makes his blood run hot.

As one of the league’s toughest enforcers, Van Turner is ruthless on the ice. He plays hard because it’s the only way to channel the rage boiling inside, and a reputation as an A-hole is better than everyone knowing the truth. Van has spent his entire life running from a secret that’s kept him from getting involved in relationships—or accepting lucrative deals with East Coast teams. Then the Carolina Cold Fury makes him an offer he can’t refuse . . . and Van meets a woman he can’t resist.

Simone Fournier is the stubborn one in her family—and that’s saying something, considering her brothers are two of the Cold Fury’s biggest stars. Simone gets what she wants, and what she wants is Van. Still, there’s a part of him Simone can’t reach, no matter how hard she tries. In private, he’s all fire and passion. In public, he freezes her out. Van may want to push her away, but Simone won’t let him go that easily. Because this time, she’s playing for keeps.

Praise for Van

“Easily read as a standalone. I really did not know what I was getting with this book. I read the reviews, and most loved it, but others really hated it.
I love this series. This book was just so-so for me. While I didn’t love it, I also didn’t hate it.
Their story could be considered a taboo romance. You don’t ever sleep with your teammates sister.
Van and Simone’s story had a lot of the same good stuff I love about the series, it was well written, a good story that tugs at your heartstrings, and had great characters. It was similar to Hawke and Max’s story, in that it runs parallel to Lucas.
It differs in that a lot of the first few chapters are almost identical to chapters in Lucas. There is a lot of sex in this book, a lot of inventive and rough sex. (All consensual) And it was much shorter than earlier books.
I was looking forward to Simone’s story. I loved the little snippets of her we got in Max and Lucas (her brothers books). She seems down to earth and fun. What we got was a character so far from how she was portrayed it was almost like reading an entirely new character. She was snarky, a bit mouthy, pushy, brazen, extremely sexual, and a bit stalkery at least where Van was concerned. She wanted him from the moment she saw him, and went way out of her way to make that happen. Almost to the point of sexually harassing him.
Van was hard to read. He was so closed off, distant, anti social. But was very honest with Simone when they finally do get together about what she is to him. Van is fighting some serious demons in his life. He’s chosen to keep himself isolated because of what he is afraid he will become. What may be lurking just under his skin, something in his very DNA.
It was not a bad story, just different enough that it was, at times, difficult to read. They do finally end up together after battling Vans demons together. And I will continue reading the series.

My major problem with this book (and this had zero impact on my review, just a practice I really don’t care for. And I’m pretty sure it’s something the author does not control) was the price. It was 156 pages, for the same price as earlier books that were much longer. The first three books started off 1 and 2 dollars less, and were all close to 300 pages. They hook you in, raise the price, and lower the page count. Not cool. If the page count goes down, so should the price. JMO

Van A Cold Fury Hockey Novel Carolina Cold Fury Hockey Book 9 edition by Sawyer Bennett Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

**Advanced copy provided by the author, NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review**

This is one of my favorite series and Sawyer Bennett continues to find ways to infuse new life and elements into every single book that comes out. Van is no exception and I was drawn in from the very first page.

Van Turner is one of the best players the Cold Fury has recently picked up, and while he's known for his aggressive play on the ice, he can only be described as closed off and a loner off of it. He prefers to keep to himself and not attach himself to anyone. He's got deep rooted issues from his childhood that have caused him to put up the walls and he has no intention of taking them down for anyone.

Simone Fournier is the sister of two of Van's teammates, Lucas and Max. When she shows up on Lucas' doorstep, which also happens to be Van's too, she makes it known she's moving in for the foreseeable future. She's instantly attracted to the moody teammate of her brothers and she's not one to be deterred by his less than welcoming attitude.

As Simone barrels forward with trying to seduce Van, she also is trying to figure out where she belongs and where her life is headed. When the two embark on a purely physical arrangement it's satisfying for the both of them, but is it possible to keep feelings out of it? And, will the insecurities and issues from Van's past end up driving them apart?

I was so ready for this book after witnessing the tension between Van and Simone in Lucas' book and I was not disappointed. Both Simone and Van had their issues, but in the end, what they were able to bring to one another was exactly the right mix of what they each needed. Kudos to Sawyer Bennett for continuing to give us engaging and entertaining stories in this fantastic series!
The only reason I didn’t do a DNF when I started this book is because I requested it from NetGalley and I felt obligated to write a review. So I kept on reading and thankfully, when I was about 50% of the book, it turned into the wonderful love story that I always expect from Sawyer Bennett. I have been a fan of Ms Bennett for some time and have read A LOT of her books and loved them all, so one dud is not a bad thing. I’m pretty sure the book was fantastic for other readers. So I will explain below.

Simone Fournier arrived at her brother’s house, with suitcases, uninvited. She dropped out of college where she was one semester away from finishing pre-med in an Ivy League University. She realized that studying medicine was her father’s dream, not hers, so she dropped out and appeared on her brother Lucas’ doorstep. Lucas lived in a very small house with Van, another player in the Cold Fury hockey team. The house only had two bedrooms and neither of the guys ceded her his bedroom, so she claimed the couch for sleeping. She met Van and she liked what she saw and she decided she wanted him. Thus starts a sexual harassment campaign. She relentlessly pursued him, no holds barred, offering sex, dressing provocatively, in a pushy and constant manner. No matter that Van told her he didn’t want to get involved with her, she didn’t heed his warning and kept pushing, to the extent that Van had to keep away from the house or hide in his room. I can understand that a woman has a right to own her sexuality but if this were coming from a man, it would be called sexual harassment, but coming from a woman, she called it seduction??

Finally Van succumbed to so much temptation, and the sex was stratospherically good. So they agree to a sex only rule, no further involvement. Van has powerful reasons for not wanting to get involved with women, and he’s kept a wall around him all his life. His father was a sociopath, convicted of raping and murdering women. He lived the scandal of the trial and conviction and the aftermath was so vicious for a little boy that he learned to hide within himself and not let anyone in. Until Simone and her pushy ways got into him.
So, once Simone and Van are involved, they were great for each other. After the fact, I realized that if Simone hadn’t been so pushy and corralled Van the way she did, he probably would have kept closed off and never come out of hiding.

Simone had some growing up to do, she needed to figure out what to do with her life and return the money that her parents had invested in her career. I didn't have a lot of admiration for Simone at first, except that once she had Van, she was a fantastic girlfriend, supportive and understanding. She helped him a lot in overcoming his issues.

Van was opening up, letting people in and getting involved with what was happening around him. They both needed to grow as a couple, since this was new territory for both.
Once Simone was in a committed relation with Van, she turned into the good girl that everyone said she was. The vibe I got from the book was that she was sex-starved, given the insistence with which she pursued Van. Also, her choice of work and attire. It just did not jibe with the image of a good girl. Nevertheless, once the book got going with Van and Simone as a couple, and they started mingling with the Simone’s brothers and sisters in law, we get to see a Van learning the ropes of social interplay, trying to let people in and wanting to please Simone. He did a lot of growing up, even though he was always afraid of turning into a monster like his father later in life.

A scandal happens, and it will test them as a couple and their commitment to each other.
Apart from the beginning and the distaste I felt for the way Simone pursued Van, it was a great book, like all the other Sawyer Bennett books. Great reading, great hockey family, great pace. In this book, I loved the male character. It was like seeing a guy who was socially stumped, go baby steps into opening his self and slowly approaching happiness.
I really did not know what I was getting with this book. I read the reviews, and most loved it, but others really hated it.
I love this series. This book was just so-so for me. This TRUE STORY reveals competitive strategy and insider knowledge of college football, college life and the grass roots evolution of politics that began in academia and now shapes the political aspects of our everyday life. An unfiltered look at players, coaches and student life in the world of College Football.

This fast paced, biographical work contains layers of storyline with twists and turns that are poignant, and startling.

Join three young men as they launch themselves onto the college football scene and refuse to be denied their impact both on and off the field while living on the edge and pushing the envelope for their colleagues on campus. Snippets of similar college scandals occasionally get revealed in the media, but Universities spend a great deal of money on their image to cover up the facts while the media fails to connect the dots in fear of persecution. Overlook perception and seek reality with this novel. Find out what it is really like to rise to the level of playing college football. If you want the real world of football, this is it, otherwise, listen to the news.

HEAVY IS THE HEAD THAT WEARS THE CROWN as these extraordinary athletes have decisions to make that are crowded by circumstances that continually provide opportunities for them to fail in rising to the level of achievement that they know they have earned. These mistakenly overlooked college football players take over a struggling football team with their drive and tenacity, all in an effort to play one more football season. Understanding their romantic interests as they struggle not to be dragged under provides a highly insightful gaze into their world.

The dynamics of college football, deciding on a future and motivation for achievement are illustrated here in a true story of the thin line between being an exceptional football player and the ever expanding world of claims that all performers are equal despite the results that prove to differentiate those same performers. At a new school, on a new team, joining the college ranks, these young men face more reality than they anticipated as they hold their future in their own hands and are first hand participants in the real world evolution of organizational politicking, power struggles and the freedom to pursue the college endeavor as they see fit.

This true story is worth picking up simply to have an accurate overview of the inner workings and value of university education, college football and power struggles. It serves as both a remarkable story of college life and as an instruction manual to the pitfalls of the people surrounding exceptional individuals, in addition to the political motivations of higher education organizations. College football, coaching motivations and the nature of organizational leaders is clearly depicted here as your guide.

GRAB ONTO THE SAFETY RAIL WITH BOTH HANDS!

INTENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES

Scroll up and click the Look Inside feature of the Edition on the top right hand side of the book cover for a closer look at the early contents of the book before it really heats up!

Hard Wired A Crash Course in Small College Football Jebb A Rebal Books

An exceptionally written book that recalls the great personal triumphs of three football players overcoming a football program that falls apart in the first few weeks of the season and has to rebuild. It clips along at an irresistible pace and I never wanted to put it down. It was such an easy read. I imagine that sports fans will love the journey that these young men go on, but the book was so much more than that! The book says what nobody is willing to say as it brings you into their universe like you were there in a world that you would have to see to believe.
From Guardian writer Paula Cocozza, a debut novel of the breakdown of a marriage, suburbian claustrophobia, and a woman's unseemly passion for a fox

One summer’s night, Mary comes home from a midnight ramble to find a baby lying on her back door step. Has Mary stolen the baby from next door? Has the baby’s mother, Mary's neighbor, left her there in her acute state of post-natal depression? Or was the baby brought to Mary as a gift by the fox who is increasingly coming to dominate her life?

So opens How to Be Human, a novel set in a London suburb beset by urban foxes. On leave from work, unsettled by the proximity of her ex, and struggling with her hostile neighbors, Mary has become increasingly captivated by a magnificent fox who is always in her garden. First she sees him wink at her, then he brings her presents, and finally she invites him into her house.
How to Be Human A Novel Paula Cocozza 9781250129253 Books Reviews

“That’s the beauty of a wild animal…They keep their secrets. Because the paths of their world lie right at our feet.”

The interconnection between humans and the rest of the animal kingdom is s subject often explored by writers such as Helen Oyeyemi , Abby Geni, David James Poissant and other contemporary writers I respect. The fox, in particular, carries great symbolism, seen in myth as a wise and noble messenger and, conversely, as a trickster playing pranks. It’s also seen as a spirit animal, a teacher offering guidance.

The fox in this debut novel may be all three—wise, tricky and ultimately, a spirit guide. “If he never appeared, she would probably have had to invent him,” reflects Mary, a vulnerable and troubled woman who recently parted with her domineering fiancée of four years and is still forced into encounters with him. Next door are neighbors with two children, including a new baby who have a far less charitable view of the fox.

This is a strange novel and it raises many questions is Mary slowly losing her mind or is she getting in touch with her wild side in a desperate attempt at salvation? Does her escalating relationship with the fox – from wariness to romanticism – mirror her own desire for intimate connection? And do we need those connections with the animal world to define what is human within us?

Sometimes a little too self-observant, How To Be Human is, nevertheless, an audacious debut and portends good things for this writer.
Full disclosure I ❤️ foxes. So I was drawn to this book and was happy to get an ARC! I'm not sure why it took me so long to finish this novel. It certainly isn't a happy read. Mary is clearly depressed-job, her ex, her neighbors-its all becoming too much for her. She notices a fox lurking about and becomes fascinated and obsessed with him. She has some conflict with all the people important in her life her mother, her ex-husband, and even her next door neighbors, who have two children (one a newborn infant) and are experiencing their own little come-apart. My favorite portions of the book are the ones where the fox is observing and thinking his fox thoughts--magical, really. This is really a book about connecting with someone and how important that truly is. It's about our inner life and how we reconcile that life with the one most of us are forced to lead every day, filled with neighbors, parents, significant others co-workers and societal expectations. We usually have pets, and families, but what if you have neither of those things--can you have a meaningful connection with a wild animal--like a fox?
Most of us who has ever had a pet know how very human they can be….in fact, in some instances they are a better version of ourselves. Even on those days when we ignore them they remain loyal, loving, non-demanding and most importantly non-judgmental. Accepting us for whom and what we are, they can bring joy and fulfillment into tedious monotony of every day, as they unselfishly provide us with a special place in their world.

In HOW TO BE HUMAN author Paula Cocozza takes us into the life of Mary who has recently split from her boyfriend/fiancé of four years and finds herself going through a mild depression. She hates her job, feels a bit “put upon” by her neighbors and their wailing children, has lost interest in keeping a tidy house and is being stalked by her domineering and somewhat intimidating ex who still has the keys to her house and appears to not know the meaning of the word NO.

In her precarious frame of mind Mary spies a fox in her garden and after observing it becomes convinced that the fox understands her and that they have a special bond. Told from Mary’s perspective (as well as that of the sly old fox), the narrative takes us into Mary’s thoughts and her obsession with the fox who appears to be her perfect partner in life – bringing her gifts, understanding her every mood and providing solace in her time of need. Has Mary lost it by granting human feelings to this creature from the wild? Is there truly an understanding developing between them or is foxy just what his name implies?

This is an unusual story and probably not for every reader but for this reader it was an insightful look into the moral intricacies of life and what it really means to be human. 3 1/2 stars
This book steered into fantasy, and I am not a fan of fantasy.
Unusual narrative and very readable.
This is one of my favorite books, but then I have a thing for foxes.
Enjoy how It was put together...but thought she was too wacko to be believable ... would have enjoyed more of the Fox in the first person ..
3.5 stars

"I'm not staying here. I can't. . . . . . Besides, this is the last place in the world I'd want to stay."

Dreams were over-rated, especially when you were hanging onto the edge of a gully in Oklahoma's vast Indian Territory, fearing for your life. Leaving a comfortable home in order to prove one's artistic talent in a large city like Denver, Colorado now seems laughable. News flash! A vicious killer is on the loose and Hattie Walker is at his mercy, if she manages to survive the night. Traumatized by a stagecoach robbery and subsequent murders of all the occupants save herself, Hattie is further terrified when it is a group of Arapaho Indians who come to her rescue. But then that handsome lieutenant arrives.

Lieutenant Jack Hennessey cannot believe his eyes; the woman (once a childhood classmate) who has filled his dreams for years has re-appeared, providing him with the perfect opportunity to demonstrate heroism . . . . except that there was a slight twist in the translation. When Jack and Hattie leave the Arapahos and head towards Fort Reno, their lack of juvenile attachment will become the least of their worries.

"You have to find what God wants you to do, and He's got plans for me as well." Plans, plans, plans. Enjoy every disruption of plans that this book happily provides, it's a lovely continuation of the author's "Fort Reno Series".

The Lieutenant Bargain The Fort Reno Series Regina Jennings 9780764218941 Books Reviews

Childhood friends. An aspiring artist traveling by stagecoach to Denver through the untamed West. An Army lieutenant working with the Arapaho and Cheyenne to keep you he fragile peace and educate their children. What are the odds of their paths crossing?

Set at Christmas (which is why this story is on my reading list) the author weaves history, budding romance, and Christian themes is a lovely read.

“It wasn’t her fault. She hadn’t asked to be his ideal. He was the one who’d wronged her. He’d put the responsibility for his happiness on her, and that was a burden no mortal should bear.”
I have enjoyed Regina Jennings's books since the beginning, but this was definitely one of my favorites. Two strong-willed, yet vulnerable main characters make the reader realize that things are not always what they appear and just because someone seems to 'have it all together' doesn't mean that they do. Jennings included a rich history of the people around Fort Reno and now I can't wait to go out there and visit it myself! A great read-you won't be disappointed.
I really enjoyed this book and haven’t been disappointed by this author. I like how she thoroughly fleshes out her characters so that the reader understands them and their point of view. I love the author’s twist on history which she will reveal at the end in the author’s note. This twist permeates the story, and it wouldn’t be the same without it. I love Jack’s heart, his nerdy start, and his sometimes endearing cluelessness. I love how Hattie grows, becomes wise as the story progresses, and demonstrates her wisdom several chapters before the end. I enjoy the historical glimpse of the Arapaho and despite some bittersweet moments as they adapt to change, I like that the story doesn’t dwell on the bad. i love catching up with previous characters, and I will definitely read any future books in the series.
Jack Hennessey has pined for the girl back home ever since school days in Van Buren, Arkansas. Now, he focuses his time and energy on working with the Indian tribes and convincing them that sending their children to the mission school is a good thing. When he receives word that there's a survivor of a stagecoach robbery who's in the custody of the Arapaho, he heads out to help, never dreaming that the survivor would be none other than the girl from home.

Hattie Walker only wants to paint. After rejecting multiple marriage offers, her parents agree to send her to Denver with the stipulation that she must prove herself a successful artist or else she's to come home and settle down with a husband. Unfortunately, she is the lone survivor of a stagecoach robbery and finds herself all alone on the prairie - except for the Indians. When the cavalry officer comes to rescue her, she thinks she recognizes him, but not quite.

Jack simply wants to impress Hattie, even if she doesn't remember him. But, what he asks the Arapaho Chief to do and what actually happens become two different things and now Jack must figure out a solution - a bargain - to try to keep Hattie happy. But, will he ever be happy again?

What follows is a story filled with every possible emotion. What Hattie experiences with the robbery is terrifying, yet the author shows how God provided protection for Hattie. Then, after Hattie is rescued, I struggled to like her because she came across as very selfish, but her character development is wonderful. She went from an unlikeable spoiled brat to a caring, loving, mature woman. Jack's character starts out as a guy who is focused on appearances and proving himself. He grows into someone who is willing to sacrifice his passions and interests for the well-being of others. They both acknowledge their flaws and weaknesses and seek to improve and change to a better person.

In addition to the romance is a suspense story. There's the secondary story about the robbery - who was the criminal? Will he get caught? What happened to the gold? The answers unfold gradually and I was satisfied with the conclusion.

Finally, there's the story of the Indians. I appreciate the fact that the author is using real history to compose her story.

All in all, it's a solid story that flows very well from book 1 in the series. I loved following up with the other characters introduced in book 1 and I'm eager to read any future stories the author bases on Fort Reno.

Romance - PG
Language - Clean
Violence - non graphic
My rating - 5 stars.

I love that Iris, the main character, does not allow her deafness to define her. This is a lovely middle grade book that shows no one should ever feel alone or isolated. I recommend!

Song for a Whale Lynne Kelly 9781524770235 Books Reviews

If you are looking for a heart-warming tale that will bring tears to your eyes, this is the book for you! Twelve year old Iris is deaf and a tech genius but everyone around her treat her like she isn't smart at all. Being in a school that no one understands her or wants to learn sign language, Iris feels alone until a movie being shown at school about a whale who is like Iris in many ways, Blue 55 is unable to speak to other whales due to him having a different song than normal whales.

It makes Iris want to make him a song that only Blue 55 can hear but no one in her family understands her reason until her deaf grandmother makes the simple suggestion of taking a little trip. As Iris travels more than 3,000 miles, nothing about this trip is easy nor will the end result will be what she wanted it to be. Until Iris makes that decision to do what she wants that will end in that heart-warming finale that will make you proud of Iris for what she did in order to make her dream come true!

I loved the detail that this Author spent on Iris and what she had to deal with being deaf including her love of radios that she can still hear through the vibrations that they make. It's how she was able to make that song that lead to that amazing ending! It was sad to see that even her own dad didn't learn much sign language to be able to communicate with his own daughter, the sad thing is that really happens in real life as well. That part kinda sucked about this book but having a strong willed girl like Iris just made this book good to the part that she did what she did in order for Blue 55 to hear his song in the end!

Let's just say that this was a good read with a subject that is easy to set up for discussion with your kids of what would you do different and how would you deal with being deaf.

Thank You to Lynne Kelly for this awesome book to bring your experience to the table in a way that made this a good read!

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the Publisher!
This is one of those books that teach children to be empathetic towards others and other creatures. This centers around a deaf girl who has found out that there is a whale that is not able to be heard. She creates a way so the whale will be able to hear her sing to him. The whale is 3000 miles away so Iris and her grandmother take off to find the whale.
Engrossing and complex this book is about communication and the eternal struggle to find wavelengths where we can be heard. This story is written with grace and skill with the author perfectly maintaining the voice of the child throughout the book. The reader follows Iris, a bright creative girl who also happens to be deaf showing the various ways she connects with others. An excellent book for any child showing life challenges can be met with determination, creativity and love. A meaningful and powerful message.
When I first heard about this one I knew I had to read it. Because that cover is all kinds of stunning. And the story seemed amazing too. I do not think I have ever read a book about a deaf girl, and I was so excited to finally get to do that. Parts of this book were all kinds of awesome. But sadly, almost all of the book was bad. Oh.

And because of that I'm giving this book two stars. Which makes me so sad, but it has to be done. I had so many issues with this one. Yet I also enjoyed some of it a whole lot. I have so much to share about it. First, a huge thank you to the publisher for letting me take part in the blog tour and for sending me the lovely book.

While my blog tour in late January was supposed to be a review and a giveaway, I do not feel okay with sharing a two star review for a blog tour. Will be posting my review today, and will hopefully be sharing a spotlight and giveaway of an ARC post in January. I truly wish I could say that I loved this book. As I really wanted to. It seemed incredible. And looks truly gorgeous. But it was sadly filled with issues. I will start by saying that I have no idea if any of the deaf part of the book had issues as well, as I do not know anyone that is deaf. I will say that I found all of it to be written really well. I loved that the main girl was deaf. I loved reading about how she lived every day as a deaf person. Was so very interesting. And she was all kinds of awesome because of that. Love.

But sadly that did not save this book. Because even though the deaf parts were incredible, the rest of the writing was so very much not. I could not connect to anything in this book. It also felt so rushed. And a bit awkward at times. Especially so because Iris is said to be twelve years old, but yet she felt years younger than that. Which was a bit depressing. I also did not like this girl. Because of her personality. She treated a girl in her class so very badly. And not once was that owned up to. It bothered me so much, at all times.

Sure, it is written in a way that makes it seem like the girl in her class was an idiot, and doing everything wrong. But she was not. She was a girl who could hear. And who tried so hard to learn sign language so that she could talk to Iris too. But Iris did nothing to help her with this. All she did was turn away from her and ignore her and get angry with her for not being able to sign anything right. I felt like Iris should have helped her. Should have tried to be her friend, like this girl was trying so so very hard to be hers. Hmph.

Which means that sadly I did not like Iris very much at all. I tried to love her, I truly did. But yeah. No. She treated this girl badly in the beginning of the book. And then near the end she reads something about her, and she laughs and laughs at her, and it made me dislike Iris more and more. Was not good. Sure, there were parts of Iris that I liked. Getting to know how she talked with sign language was awesome. So loved her friendship with this adorable boy that was deaf as well. It was pretty adorable. But was sadly too little.

This book is about Iris being unhappy in her school. Since she is the only one there that is deaf. And her grandparents are deaf too, but her grandpa is dead and her grandma lives at a home for old people. Her mom can sign language too, and her brother as well. Her father was not good at it. And that was written badly too, because it was all kinds of painful to read about, and it really shouldn't have been written that way, at least, I do not think it should have. Parts of Iris's life was hard to read, which was bad and good.

While at school, she learns about a whale. Blue 55. He has a different song than every other whale in the ocean, and so no one can understand him. He is all alone and has no one around him. This is somewhat a true story, and I did like that a whole lot. It was interesting to read about the whales and such. But also a little weird. There are even really small pages with the whale point of view. Yeah. That was odd. And the way Iris reacted to learning about the whale. Yeah. I cannot support that. Not at all. Which is depressing.

I did love that Iris felt strongly about this whale. That she wanted to help him connect with others. Liked that she decided to make a song for him that he could hear, that no other whale could sing for him. But what I did not like is that she got obsessed with this whale right away and decided that she had to go to Alaska to find him, to see him. Did not like how she treated her family because of this. And then she runs away. With her grandmother. On a cruise ship, for weeks, without telling her family first. Uhm. What even.

I cannot help but say that I found this book to be a bit problematic. If that is the right word. It might not be, but I'm not sure how else to describe it. This book makes it feel it was okay that twelve year old deaf Iris ran away with her old and deaf grandmother, who was grieving for her dead husband, and was in a home because they feared she could not take care of herself. Yeah. And they run away together. That was not safe. And it was not okay. Sure, Iris thinks about her family a couple of times while being away. Hahaha.

That was not okay either. She is on a cruise for Alaska, far away from her family, without talking to them or telling them where she is going or why. Her grandma is keeping them updated, but that was still not an okay thing to do. Yet this book tells it in a way that it felt okay, that it was the right thing for Iris to do. That it was the only thing she could have done, the thing she was supposed to do. I do not support that at all. It was reckless and dangerous. Gosh, my review is much longer than I had planned for it to be. Sorry, haha.

But can't stop writing about this book. I must share all my thoughts. Some spoilers. There is even a scene in the book where Iris jumps into cold water and swims toward a huge whale. Looking it in the eyes. And swimming around it. Not once is it mentioned that this is dangerous. And it was. Incredibly so. And I'm not sure why this book is making it seem like all of this was okay. Hmm. Can't help but feel that this book was not all that safe. Of course, it is highly possible that I am the only one to feel this way, that others will not.

Which is also okay. I'm sorry to say that Song for a Whale was not a book for me at all. I wanted to love it, so so badly, but I could not. I found parts of it to be very good, and I wanted to know more. But most parts where not good at all. And I may have shared way too much in my review. But I just could not stop writing and I do not regret it. So curious to know what others will think of this book. Do let me know if you read it. Huge thank you to Random House Kids for sending me a free ARC copy of this book to read and review.

---

This review was first posted on my blog, Carina's Books.
